World Cup 2014 - Salvador

01 Jun 2014 - 31 Jul 2014
Place: Salvador

Salvador, Brazil's first capital that was founded in 1549, is the cradle of the singular joyfulness and of the syncretism of races and beliefs that make up the Brazilian culture and history. This city, therefore, could not be left out of the group that will host the World Cup in 2014.

On May 31st of 2009 Salvador was officially confirmed as one of the twelve cities in Brazil where the World Cup matches will be undertaken. Salvador was one of the favourite cities, chosen for its infrastructure and great tourist potential. Much work still needs to be done to improve the city in order to suit all FIFA's requirements.

Salvador counts on 3 stadiums, the Otávio Mangabeira's (well-known as Fonte Nova Stadium) has been chosen to hold the matches. The Bahia's government intends to reform the Fonte Nova Stadium with public and private investments, amounting to about 564 millions BLR. The construction is forecasted to start in February 2010.

The great aim of the state's government is concerning mobility and accessibility. An expected investment plan totalling 1.3 billion BLR is predicted. The subway Line 1 will be expanded in order to reach the capacity of about 250 thousand passengers per day. The building of the Line 2 is also foreseen, in order to connect the airport to the city centre, relieving the traffic on the roads BR 093 and BA 324.

The restructuration of the current system of public transport in Salvador, as well as the relocation of public and private parking lots are also in the Bahia's government plans for the world event.

The coordination in charge of the World Cup 2014 organization in Salvador is in contact with many institutions and organizations of diverse sectors in the city. According to the mayor, João Henrique, the aim is to count on the participation of all civil society with the challenge of making from this sportive event a world party, because the World Cup belongs to everybody.
