The Folk Ballet of Bahia aims to provide more comprehensive overview of the folklore in the region, showing the most traditional popular culture of the state, in a compact presentation, which allows the audience to get a sense of the cultural richness of Bahia. The event is composed of orishas' dances, maculelê, puxada de rede, capoeira e samba de roda.
The Folk Ballet was created in 1988 and since then it has toured nationally and internationally. In its curriculum, there are various awards such as "Melhor Espetáculo de Dança da Bahia" (Best Dance Presentation of Bahia), "Prêmio Fiat do Brasil" (Brazil's Fiat Award), "Melhor Espetáculo de Dança do Brasil" (Best Dance Spectacle of Brazil), "Melhor Preparação Técnica de Elenco" (Best Casting's Technique Preparation) and "Melhor Pesquisa em Cultura Popular" (Best Research in Popular Culture), offered by Ministry of Culture.
After tours in Europe, North America, the Caribbean and Oceania, the group was hailed by The New York Times as "the best and one and the most important folkloric dance group in the world" today. The group was created and is managed by Walson Botelho and has the artistic direction of José Carlos Arandiba (Zebra). The Folk Ballet of Bahia performs daily, during all year long, from Monday to Saturday, at 8:00 pm.
