The exhibition will celebrate 95 years of the German artist Hansen Bahia, who became a naturalized Bahian. Hansen was the first great spokesperson in Bahia and in the 50's, he was responsible for the enhancement of woodcuts, which is the most democratic kind of arts.
The exhibition, inspired on the artist's birthday, April 19, presents moulds and woodcuts from various series and times.
The pieces were restored for the first time and this work was made possible by the German government's investment of BLR 85.000. According to the exhibition's curator, Deborah Leda, the main criterion used to select the works was to save those that were at risk of become irreparable. She have selected, among the nearly 65 works, the series "Navio Negreiro' (slave ship) and "Via Crúcis do Pelourinho". The restoration of the works took ten months. Hansen Bahia was born in 1915 and died in 1978. His real name was Karl Heinz Hansen, but he fell in love with Bahia, embodying then, the name of the state.
In Germany, he had worked as a sailor, where he stayed until 1955 before coming to Bahia. He became a sculptor, poet, writer, filmmaker and painter. However, he stood out as woodcutter. His first works of art appeared in the early 40's, still in Germany. The humanist and expressionist styles marked his works. He let his heritage in Bahia, about 13 thousand pieces, of which 12 thousand are of his own authorship and a thousand of his wife, Ilse Hansen. All the collection and production was at São Felix, in Hansen Bahia Foundation.
The Exhibition "Hansen Bahia 95 years" will take place in Salvador until early April, and after that, goes to the Hansen Bahia Foundation, for annual exhibition. It is open from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm and on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
